For our first interview, we had the pleasure of speaking with our good friend and fellow flight attendant, Vera. Vera has been in the industry going on five years, currently lives in Boston and recently started her own wellness travel blog about living a balanced lifestyle as a flight attendant/frequent traveler. Ready for our first Spotlight? Let’s “fly” in!!

Fit For Flight: You’re very into health and wellness. What made you want to start your own IG page “BalancedFlyer”?

Vera: Exploring new cities and finding all the healthy but cute restaurants and stores is literally my favorite thing to do. I use the “Balanced Flyer” [Instagram] page as a creative outlet to post and share everything I find. I would have friends on the regular, texting me and asking me what I recommend when it comes to layovers and where to go. Even my non-flight attendant friends would hit me up when visiting a city to see what’s good. So, I made the page as a fun way to share while getting creative at the same time.

FFF: We love it! As a flight attendant/someone who is always on-the-go, what are some products you swear by that you would recommend for other travelers and fellow flight attendants?

V: Find a HEAVY moisturizer. Air travel is so freaking dehydrating, your skin will drink up whatever you put on it immediately. ATM (at the moment) I swear by Cocokind Matcha Moisturizer  and Matcha All Over Moisture Stick. Those are both miracle products. And then of course my chlorophyll drops! If you know me, you know about my fancy little green water I always have on hand. It’s so simple yet makes such a huge difference in my skin, digestive system and keeping things functioning while traveling. Plus, it’s an easy way to make sure you’re getting all your water in.

FFF: Ooo! We will have to try Cocokind! When you’re home, what’s your typical fitness & health routine like? What about when you’re traveling?

V: At home I’m always on the go. I try to do a workout class such as SoulCycle or a yoga sculpt class at Corepower Yoga. If I don’t get one of those done, I at least go for a super long walk. I try to cook and eat at home as much as possible. I just like to know what’s in my food plus it helps save money. On my layovers, I tend to focus on relaxation and recovery a little bit more. I’ll still make it to a class if there is conveniently one nearby, or I love walking around and simply admiring another city while listening to a podcast. But honestly if I’m not feeling it, I’ll chill at a coffee shop, bookstore or my hotel room. Food wise I typically have my go-to healthy spots that I like, or I’ll try to find the nearest Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods.

FFF: Oh yes! We know you’re big on grocery shopping at Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s (and as you previously mentioned), so what are some of your favorite items to snack on or drink when you travel?

V: This one is so easy for me! I try to get as much fresh food as possible. [Having fresh food] is so much easier on your digestive system especially while flying. I like to go for bell peppers (my fave sliced up), cucumbers, dates (which are so good for dealing with a sweet tooth) or something like peaches or pears if they’re in season. The Seasnax seaweed packs are so good as well as Simple Mills crackers with something like Kite Hill cream cheese and Hope brand hummus to dip in. For beverages, I’m obsessed with Matcha Bars Hustle energy drink. It gives you such a clean energy flow with all the benefits Matcha has to offer. Harmless Harvests coconut water is hands down the most refreshing drink on the planet. I could go on with this list for a while, but I’ll keep it simple for ya.

FFF: Yum! We love sliced veggies with hummus too! What do you think is the hardest part for you about keeping up with a healthy & balanced lifestyle, and what advice would you give to someone who is just starting out or struggling to find a good balance between traveling and home life?

V: Prepare. In. Advance. I know it’s not that easy when you are first starting off on reserve or living in a crash pad [for flight attendants] But simple things like looking up the closest grocery store on a layover or making sure you have healthy snacks on hand at all times will help keep you from making decisions you might regret later. The inconsistency of this job has been the biggest challenge I still deal with to this day. But just make sure you are prioritizing rest, movement and nourishing your body with clean food as much as you can.

FFF: Great advice! Where are some of your favorite places that you like to travel? What makes them your favorite?

V: I’d say my top four places to travel while I’m working are Los Angeles, Austin TX, San Francisco and Portland OR. It’s honestly so hard for me to even pick. I find aspects of most cities that I love, but these four [cities] each seem to have a laidback vibe with great food options and plenty to do outdoors.

FFF: How do you keep yourself motivated when it comes to your fitness routine?

V: Lately, I just do what feels good. I find instructors who have awesome music playlists and are full of inspiration during classes. Having an accountability buddy makes a huge difference too. If you’ve got a friend that you know is going to show up to that early morning class the next day, it makes it a hell of a lot harder to cancel, since you aren’t letting [just] yourself down, but [you would be letting] someone else [down too]. Plus, it’s just fun working out with a friend! I simply listen to my body. If I need to rest, I rest, or I just do some light movement such as going for a walk.

FFF: Speaking of routine, your skin is flawless! What’s your daily skin routine? What are some of your best tips to keep a clear complexion?

V: Thank you!! I definitely swear by Cocokind products as I mentioned earlier and a good oil cleanser to get all my makeup off [that doesn’t end up] stripping my skin of all the moisture. Sunscreen daily is definitely a must, and the sunscreen in makeup is not enough! I use a caffeinated moisturizer with spf 50 to keep my skin firm and protected while out and about. But the biggest way I take care of my skin is internally. When I’ve been stressed or a little over indulgent with sugar or alcohol, it shows up on my face quick. I just try to combat it with drinking a ton of water and getting right back into my healthy routine by sweating [it out] – there’s something about getting in a really good sweat [sesh] that gives your skin that glow later on.

FFF: Of course! There is nothin’ like a good sweat sesh! You know when it comes to diet it’s all about balance, what are some of your favorite foods to treat yourself?

V: Ohhhh so many!! But hands down good ole southern food is a surefire way to my heart. Give me all the shrimp and grits, biscuits, pralines, and crawfish. I truly love food, and I am usually willing to try anything. A nice big bowl of ramen and a table full of different kinds of dumplings never fails either. Damn now I’m hungry!

FFF: So are we! We created the motto “Go Live. Stay Fit” which means you can experience/enjoy all that life has to offer without sacrificing your fitness and health. How do you “Go Live and Stay Fit?”

V: Simply do what makes you feel good, and really be mindful of that as well. You gotta take care of yourself physically and mentally. Being too restrictive is not taking care of yourself. My goal is to be “well,” and sometimes that’s means brunch with friends, a night out with my boyfriend, or [taking] a 7:00 a.m. class with a green juice after. The goal isn’t perfection; the goal is balance.

FFF: Sounds like a good motto to us!!
